Owen Sound Sun Times: Jolley Free to Speak His Mind
Shane Jolley says breaking his ties with the Green Party and becoming an independent was a tough decision, but it was something he had to do for himself and for the people of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
The owner of Jolley's Alternative Wheels in downtown Owen Sound, who has been affiliated with the Greens in the past and has had some success with them on election day, decided in the spring he would run independent in the Oct. 6 election.
"It was a tough, tough…

Taking Responsibility: Starting Off Right
Thank you to all who attended the launch of my "Taking Responsibility" campaign on Saturday. For those who missed it I made two important announcements about the conduct of the campaign.
After the October 6th election I want to look back and say, "We started off right". This means that my campaign will take responsibility for public tax dollars, and will not accept the 15% government subsidy. Our campaign will be funded completely by individual donations from supporters.
Our…

Why Vote Independent in Bruce-Grey?
What does it mean to vote for an Independent candidate in Bruce-Grey?
This is the most common question asked of me since choosing to run as an independent candidate rather than a Green Party candidate.
The idea of voting Independent has become unfamiliar to many voters who have grown accustomed to the party system. It hasn’t always been this way. Our democratic system is built on the idea of…

Reform, don’t eliminate municipal governments.
In recent months, much discussion has arisen about eliminating the local municipalities and councils in Grey and Bruce and moving to a single tier municipal government. The services provided by our towns and townships, from filling potholes to local land use planning, would become the responsibility of the county. Proponents claim that such backward measures are required to address rising costs and encourage more cooperation across current municipal…

Putting Bruce-Grey First
I play house-league soccer as a goalie. I enjoy being the "keeper" because of the responsibility that it entails. No matter how well or how poorly my team plays, the ultimate responsibility for keeping the ball out of the goal net is mine. At the end of the game I cannot blame anyone else for the goals that got past me. I must learn from errors and become a better keeper.…

School Blues
As I sat through the Provincial budget presentation at Queen’s Park last week, I couldn’t help but scoff under my breath as Finance Minister Dwight Duncan droned on endlessly about protecting education. This, while we’re going through two school accommodation reviews in our region, one in Chesley/Hanover, and…
